caramelized ham-onion-swiss sliders

man oh man oh man! lemme tell you ‘bout these ham-onion-cheese roll/slider/sandwiches… they are buttery, caramelized, melty, savory and sweet little bundles of joy! don’t let the [somewhat] long list of sauce ingredients fool you – these are super easy to make and can be made ahead! They are perfect for a potluck, appetizers at a dinner party or an event like the Super Bowl, which is why I made them and lemme tell you… they were a hit!

caramelized ham-onion-swiss sliders

yields: 12 sliders

prep time: 1 hour               cook time: 35 minutes

 

INGREDIENTS

12-pack of Hawaiian rolls

1/3 cup mayo

1 Tbsp. prepared horseradish

6 slices Swiss cheese

12 slices deli ham

1 stick butter

½ cup onion, finely chopped

2 Tbsp. brown sugar

1 Tbsp. spicy brown mustard

2 tsp. poppy seeds

1 ½ tsp. Worcestershire sauce

½ tsp. garlic powder

¼ tsp. onion powder

flakey salt for sprinkling

 

DIRECTIONS

Take the entire 12-pack of Hawaiian rolls and cut them in half length-wise.

*no need to individually slice each roll – keep them all stuck together.

Place the bottom rolls in a 9x13 baking dish.

In a small bowl, combine the mayo and prepared horseradish. Spread all of the mayo mixture across the roll bottoms.

Layer on the meat and cheese. Place the roll tops back on.

Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent.

Add the remaining ingredients: brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire, poppy seeds, garlic & onion powder and whisk until the butter is incorporated and everything is combined well.

Pour the butter sauce over the top of the rolls, getting all of the tops and sides all buttery and delicious.

Cover the baking dish and place in the fridge (or on your wintery porch like I did) and let sit for a few hours or even overnight.

*this allows for the butter to solidify a bit; however, if you don't have the time, you can bake them straight away.

Preheat the oven to 350°.

Bake [covered] for 25 minutes. Bake [uncovered] for another 10 minutes.

Sprinkle some flakey salt over the tops and serve immediately – with napkins!
