philly-style sloppy joes [#1]

when is the last time you had a sloppy joe? more importanly, does anyone else immediately sing the Adam Sandler song in their head when they hear sloppy joe?? well, it's a classic! this recipe is sweet, tangy, filled with veggies [snuck in] and 3 different types of meat. it's hearty, easy, comforting and delicious!

 

philly-style sloppy joes

yields: 6 servings              

prep time: 10 minutes              cook time: 30 minutes

 

INGREDIENTS

1 lb. pork/beef/veal mixture 

2 Tbsp. butter

1 yellow onion, diced

1 green bell pepper, diced

4 oz. brown mushrooms, minced 

1 tsp. minced garlic

1 cup ketchup

2 Tbsp. brown sugar

2 tsp. Dijon mustard 

2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp. kosher salt

freshly ground black pepper

6 brioche or Hawaiian buns

6 thick slices of provolone or muenster cheese

 

DIRECTIONS

In a large sauté pan over medium-high heat, cook the meat mixture until almost browned.

Drain the excess fat from the meat and set it aside. 

Reduce the heat to medium and melt the butter. Add the diced onion and pepper and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. 

Add the minced mushrooms and garlic and sauté for another minute. 

Meanwhile, in a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, brown sugar, Dijon, Worcestershire, salt and pepper.

Return the meat to the pan, pour the sauce mixture over the top and stir until everything is coated in the sauce,

Cover and let simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. 

Place the bun halves onto a large foil-lined baking sheet. Broil until they are lightly browned.  

Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves, top with slices of cheese and return to the oven.

Broil for a couple of minutes, until the cheese is melted. 

Serve immediately and enjoy!
